Most people think ants are one of the cleaner species of insect. On the same token, however, most folks don’t want ants in their home. So if they see a lot of ants, what do they do? They set up ant traps. That makes sense. If they work, great. Now you don’t have to deal with the ants anymore. If they don’t work, however, they end up coming to us.

There are two things that every homeowner should know about ants. They are much more problematic than most people give them credit for being. They can do serious damage to your woodwork and their presence will draw in other invasive species like spiders. Secondly, there are over 12,000 different kinds of ants across the world. Dozens might be present here in the Northwest part of the United States. Knowing what kind of ant you have a problem with is the first step toward devising an effective eradication strategy.

The ant exterminators at Elevate Pest Control have helped a number of Hyrum residents get rid of ants and other invasive species. If you have a serious ant problem, you should act quickly. Give us a call or talk to us online to set up an appointment today.

When DIY Methods Fail

Most folks find ants in their home and the first thing that they do is go out and buy ant traps. That’s not the worst idea in the world. Yet many of our customers come to us after those ant traps failed to work. That’s okay because they’re cheap and it never hurts to give them a shot before spending more money on an exterminator.

But there are problems with using baits in your home. One of the biggest problems is that homeowners aren’t sure what kind of bait they should use. Baits you buy at the store may be effective against one type of ant, but the ants you have in your home ignore them completely. By chance, some homeowners will buy the right baits for the ants that they have and it works. So identifying what type of ant you have in your home is the first step that a professional exterminator will take when deploying a solution.

On top of that, there are some species of ants that are very difficult to tell apart. Do you know those tiny black ants? Well, those are actually two different species. One, the pavement ant, can be found just about anywhere. But the other species, the odorous house ant, looks nearly identical. The only way to tell them apart is by crushing them and then smelling them. If the ant emits a pleasant odor like pine or coconut, then you’re dealing with an odorous house ant. But do you really want to sniff the dead carcasses of crushed ants? Probably not.

Ants also have different nutritional needs depending on what time of year it is. Spring ants may load up on proteins while ants in late summer and fall may want sugars and carbs. There’s a lot to know when it comes to getting rid of ants in your house!

The Baits are Working but the Ants Keep Coming Back

This is another one that we hear all the time. The ants are getting killed by the baits, but they keep coming back. This is what you need to know:

  • There are a number of different kinds of baits
  • Baits lure ants into your home

It goes without saying but the purpose of baits is to lure ants. If you use them, that’s exactly what you’re doing. If you haven’t figured out how the ants are getting in, then you’re actually going to be creating an ant problem by keeping the lures around.

Ideally, a bait should work by luring an ant to take the poison back to their nest where it kills off the entire colony. Some baits don’t do this though. Instead, they poison the ant. Hence why they’re called “quick killing baits”. They work by luring the ant into your home where it will then die. If your goal is to keep ants out of your home, this isn’t a winning solution.

What many homeowners end up doing is perpetuating the problem they are trying to solve.
